A Future in Focus

For Julian Williams, a Class of 2026 film student, receiving a donor-funded scholarship granted him a secure start at Georgia State University.
Originally from New Jersey, Williams heard about Atlanta, its schools and opportunities for those pursuing film careers from an old friend living in Georgia. He started his academic journey in Georgia at Savannah College of Art and Design before realizing he wanted a change in environment — which eventually led to an interest in Georgia State’s film and media program and its campus in the heart of downtown Atlanta.
Receiving the Georgia State Alumni Association Transfer Student Scholarship provided him a smooth transition and helped him focus on his creative pursuits rather than being concerned about financial shortfalls hindering his education.
“The scholarship made me feel more secure when I started at Georgia State. It helped that I could focus on my classes and not worry about tuition, and to know that I had a place here,” said Williams.
Now a third-year student, Williams is starting the school year with valuable career-building opportunities. An aspiring film director who hopes to one day his own production company, he credits the resources offered at Georgia State’s Creative Media Industries Institute with preparing him for a career. He is also gaining experience as an assistant camera director as part of an internship with The Production Roadmap Series, a program that offers experiential learning through workshops and networking opportunities for students interested in the film industry.
The Georgia State Alumni Association offers a variety of programs to help alumni remain involved with the university. The Alumni Association Transfer Student Scholarship is one of the group’s many philanthropic efforts designed to help students reach their academic goals.
Williams describes the scholarship he received as being a main source of motivation to pursue these opportunities and building his confidence as he explores the world of film and media outside of the classroom.
“I feel more confident as I continue to learn about the industry. Receiving a scholarship has also pushed me harder. It has motivated me to excel.”
As Williams enters the latter half of his degree program, he recalls the support he received at the beginning of his journey that opened a door to the field he is passionate about.
“No matter how much, any donation definitely does help. The support adds up and makes a huge difference.”
