Empowering the Next Generation

Georgia State University neuroscience and psychology student Nia Webb understands the value of venturing down different paths to figure out what the future may hold. She also knows firsthand that she would not have the opportunity to academically explore without the donor-funded financial support she has received.
Originally from Maryland, Webb was drawn to Georgia State’s technologically advanced facilities, such as the Creative Media Industries Institute, and campus environment that fosters diversity. With interests spanning both the humanities and sciences, Webb spent her first few semesters at Georgia State considering different majors and career paths. When worries about paying tuition threatened to halt her academic career, a WomenLead scholarship provided relief and propelled her to continue exploring. An elective class lead her to discover a new academic passion: neuropsychology.
Georgia State’s WomenLead program is a Signature Experience dedicated to advancing women’s leadership by empowering students to aspire to and achieve leadership roles. Originally a single course offered in the J. Mack Robinson College of Business, the program has expanded to sections in the field of business, science, policy and politics, entrepreneurship and innovation, the arts and graduate school readiness. Through experiential learning and immersive experiences, students gain valuable skills for the workforce and develop connections with faculty and community leaders in a variety of fields.
“I was in the WomenLead in Technology class. I wanted to be a well-rounded student who had diverse experiences,” said Webb. “I did a lot of personal development with them. We would hear from leaders around Atlanta and around the world. They are an amazing program.”
As she works toward graduation, Webb knows how life-changing scholarship support can be, an experience many Panthers relate to. With tuition, fees and state support covering less than less than two-thirds of the resources needed for college, many students rely on donor funded scholarships and other direct aid. Webb believes supporters’ generosity goes a long way in helping students reach their goals and realize their dreams.
“Growing up, there were two things I was taught you should never waste: talent and opportunity, but so many talented people only become successful due to the opportunities available to them,” said Webb. “Donors have a very unique chance to plant a seed in the next generation, helping students who need that push of opportunity to become successful.”
