About the Institute
The Institute for Biomedical Sciences is on a mission to advance human health. Our researchers are making exciting discoveries and tackling some of the world’s biggest health issues, from COVID-19, flu, Ebola, HIV, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and pneumonia. These talented scientists are focused on developing innovative approaches to prevent, diagnose and treat human illnesses that would lead to better patient care and new clinical applications.
The institute is also transforming education. We’ve adopted an innovative approach that combines instruction in several key areas: biomedical science, business, entrepreneurship and law. Our interdisciplinary academic programs are tailored to the biomedical industry’s needs, and students in our new bachelor’s degree program in Biomedical Science and Enterprise, as well as our master’s and Ph.D. programs, are taught the technical, legal and commercial aspects of scientific discovery.
Graduates are prepared to become leaders in the biomedical field and compete for high-demand jobs, including positions in biotechnology, pharmaceutics, consulting, education, government and other fields. They’re also equipped to pursue advanced degrees in science, business and law.
In addition, our world-class research centers provide a stellar training ground for students interested in biomedical research, giving them access to state-of-the-art facilities and mentorship from leading researchers in the field.
Join us in our efforts to improve the health of people across the globe and mold the next generation of biomedical scientists and professionals. When you donate to the Institute for Biomedical Sciences, your dollars will fund scholarships, lab and classroom instruction, and cutting-edge research.

The Director's Letter
Founded in 2014, IBMS is home to world-class faculty that are working around the clock to discover new, innovative treatments for infectious and immune-mediated diseases that affect our society. Our cutting-edge research on viral and bacterial infections, cardiovascular disease, cancer, metabolic disease, inflammatory disease and vaccine development is paving the way for the translation of discoveries from the bench to the bedside.
To truly advance human health, it’s vital to take a new approach to conducting science and training tomorrow’s leaders. IBMS is leading the way. We deeply believe in a multidisciplinary approach to research and education that combines expertise and insight from different scientific disciplines and experts. Our researchers and trainees collaborate with each other, as well as with other leading academic and industry scientists in Georgia, across the nation and worldwide. This interactive model is leading to the development of universal vaccines for flu, novel antiviral drugs and new anti-inflammatory agents with fewer side effects.
Beyond improving human health through research, IBMS is committed to training and educating the next generation of leaders in the biomedical sector. Our interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs are teaching students how to bring biomedical advances to the marketplace, empowering them to make important contributions in innovation and commercialization that will improve human health and save lives.
While IBMS has been highly successful in obtaining federal funding for our research, philanthropy is essential to enabling high-risk, high-reward studies that are needed to break through barriers that could lead to new treatments and better patient outcomes. Your support of our research and education is critical and most appreciated.
